An interview with the awesome Chris Avellone, one of Koobs' favorite people of all time and the brilliant mind behind Planescape: Torment, Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Alpha Protocol, Neverwinter Nights 2, Project Eternity and other games you've probably played and loved. The Koobismo team - represented by Karissa and Phil - asked Chris a few questions we believe you'll enjoy the answers to.

Our guest:
Chris Avellone @ChrisAvellone

Interviewers:
Karissa Barrows @SJBsMama
Phil Hornshaw @PhilHornshaw

Also, the ghosts of both Koobs and Jeff somewhere in the back of the room.

Yeah, the quest compass! Kill it with fire!

When he said that the thing he wanted to remove from games was the quest compass, I was actually shocked. It seems he forgot what happened with Morrowind. I've never even played the game and I have bad feelings about it, it's all residual from my friends who have.

Chris Avellone is my hero. Planescape: Torment is one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had, Fallout 2 was great, Fallout: New Vegas had so much subtle excellence, and KotOR2 was brilliant. Thanks for doing and putting up this interview!

And he's one of the nicest, most approachable people ever. Just brilliant and humble. We can't say enough good things about him.

whoa

Something with the volume sometimes. I guess the record was noisy. If so - nice job cleaning it.

It was Skype-based, which turned out not to be the greatest idea after all - lots of crackles, pops, noise, volumes disappearing, at one point poor ol' Jeff got booted with his recording equipment and fancy audio skills, so we were left with me + Audacity for awhile. ;)

Yeah, I am removing Skype from one of the interview options. I hear Google Hangouts is better.

The nostalgia road bit at the end is the greatest. A lot has been lost in the game companies' quest to pander to huge audiences, simplify both gameplay and story, and it's great that people like Chris have a platform to make games their own way and hopefully nudge the game industry towards a better place.

Great interview, keep bringin it, and screw generic questions. :))

Chris Avellone is one of the most fascinating people in the industry. If you ever see him at a convention, walk up, say "hi", and shake his hand. Or at least tweet at him, telling him that you enjoyed this interview.
