Marauder Shields 27: A Narrow Path (Ver. B) by koobismo Marauder Shields 27: A Narrow Path (Ver. B) by koobismo
The 27th episode of the "Marauder Shields" Mass Effect comic. In this one... A hero must take the narrow path, accompanied by a guardian.

Be sure to play this track in the background to upgrade your reading experience: [link]

Alternative version, with Ashley as the Virmire Survivor, here:
[link]

This is an ongoing story providing an alternative fan-made ending to the Mass Effect story, with a single game-changing maverick transforming the course of history: Marauder Shields. Be sure to start reading at episode 6. Special thanks to MichelKobayashi and to my awesome team, who support me immensely - more about them soon! :)

[The Mass Effect universe, its design and characters are owned by BioWare/EA Productions. This is a work of parody and fan-fiction, created under the terms of fair use. Special thanks to BioWare for creating the world we all love and care for! I remain a huge ME & BW fan!]

P.S. This episode is quite a bit different than all the previous ones... I hope you'll enjoy it. ;) And yes, we will return to the background story shown in the first few frames, with the blood on the leaves and the child's fist... ;)

P.S.2. If you're not following me yet, do so at [link] - it's sooo cool.

P.S.3. If you like ambients and epic space music, be sure to buy the soundtrack from my unfinished game, "Starsignal", available at [link] - more info here: [link] - helps me finance my own projects and fun stuff.

P.S.4. Help me spread this series around - retweet, send out links, share this with your friends and post it on your facebook wall!

P.S.5. Once we get a proper website going I will be able to drop these boring P.S.-es and stick to ones that actually change from comic to comic. ;)

It never ceases to amaze me how this strip alone can add so much to the Mass Effect franchise. It pays a huge homage to a beloved and largely wasted character, it adds a spiritual and heartfelt angle that was sorely lacking in the final analysis and it brings things full circle in a way. Shepard needing help, those who he has saved and failed to save alike coming together to lift him up and carry him over the final hurdle when he seems to have fallen...it's almost biblical.

I did not play a female shepard, I did not romance Thane, but I can imagine those that did love this story even more for having done so. For me Thane was simply a friend, a companion who in many ways had more composure and dignity than even Shepard did, and his loss was felt. The fact he could cross barriers and fight so hard to be there for Shepard in the final fight reinforces the feeling of unity and family that the Normandy had throughout the series.

This is the only ending I care about.

Thane's wisdom and clarity of mind was like a magnet to my Shepard. Those were the things she strived for, and they simply flowed through him. It was extremely sad to see him die as he did in ME3, especially consdering his prayer was for Shepard, not himself. In a way, Thane died happily, it wasn't pain free, but he died with no regrets, no remorse. He's enviable, in a way. Shepard had to go on. You're MScanon is by far amazingly better than what I got out of the endings in ME3, EC included. This is by far my favorite episode. Keep up the fantasmically amazing work!

The writing in this series is astonishing.

At first I expected Shields/Nihilus to be the one addressing Shepard. But having Thane there is so much better, and the dialog suits him.
In the Game, the dreams never made much sense to me (even got lost in em once). I thought that they would be explained at the end, so joke was on me. They just never led to anything, were not even mentioned.

But now Koobismo takes Bioware's sloppy writing and all those loose ends and spins this amazing tale. He manages to make all our favourite characters (even the ones that were written out, even the side chars) relevant again and ties them back into the main storyline. It's full of hope and purpose and heroics again now. So much more like the game I wanted to play. Plus it actually makes sense.

When I saw Thane I started to tear up. I'm not a Thanemancer at all but I still wished he had a bigger role in ME3 than dying. Thanks for giving it to him.

"The ones that would die for you"
Cause that's what Joker would have done. He would not have fled.
