Marauder Shields 28: Signals (Mass Effect) by koobismo Marauder Shields 28: Signals (Mass Effect) by koobismo
The 28th episode of the "Marauder Shields" Mass Effect comic.

In this one... Desperate decisions are made and an old friend returns, proving he is as dangerous in death as he was in life.

Be sure to play this track in the background to upgrade your reading experience: [link]

This is an ongoing story providing an alternative fan-made ending to the Mass Effect story, with a single game-changing maverick transforming the course of history: Marauder Shields. Be sure to start reading at episode 6.

Thanks and pat-on-the-bottoms to MichelKobayashi for making us believe in Marauder Shields and to my awesome team, with a special mention to Matt "Calavera" O'Connor who helped me make a few lines in this episode even more spunky!

Hold the line!

[The Mass Effect universe, its design and characters are owned by BioWare/EA Productions. This is a work of parody and fan-fiction, created under the terms of fair use. And, yes, I remain a giant fan of BW & ME]

P.S. Took me some time to complete... But I hope you see why. ;) I think it's the longest episode to date!

P.S.2. If you're not following me yet, do so at [link] - I've got bacon.

P.S.3. If you like ambients and epic space music, be sure to buy the soundtrack from my unfinished game, "Starsignal", available at [link] - more info here: [link] - helps me finance my own projects and fun stuff.

P.S.4. Help me spread this series around - retweet, send out links, share this with your friends and post it on your facebook wall! Everything helps!

Don't get me wrong, I love this twist, it answers SO many questions from the original ending, but it raises some new questions;
1. Why does a massive reaper indoctrination device require an organic to serve as the catalyst? It seems inefficient when they could just have it activate automatically upon docking with the Citadel.
2. The Reapers want to destroy/control advanced organic life while ignoring the primitive ones. How does the crucible know who to indoctrinate and who not to?
3. Why move the Citadel to Earth? It seems counter-productive if the Reapers want Shepard and co to dock the crucible with it, which they could have easily done if it had been left where it was.

Absolutely not getting you wrong, these are all questions I would ask myself and expect answers to. They're good questions, basically - and necessary to be asked. I really can't let the spoilers out right now (not a long way to go for these to be answered, though), but I believe I've covered all three of them in my scenario - which required modifying the Reaper Origins and dragging back calls to Lovecraft, Arthur Koestler's Ghost in the Machine and a bit of Philip Clayton. You'll be the judge on whether the answers are satisfactory. Mass Effect as a whole did kind of contradict itself on the Reapers a few times, which made it really hard to join it up in a logical way - but I believe it works, there's some actual philosophical thought behind it and despite it not being ideal (as in: I wouldn't go for such a thing if I had full freedom on the matter and would be planning out my own story), I think it'll fit ME nicely.

I initially dismissed the thought that the Crucible was a Trojan Horse simply because the Reapers are far too powerful to defeat without a somewhat miracle device so either way we are toast.
But latter Cerberus actually found a way to harness indoctrination and even control reaper troops, I guess things can be different, especially if the Crucible is an indoctrination amplifier...

The Crucible being a Trojan Horse makes far more sense than someone somewhere figuring out hat for some reason plugging it into the Citadel will destroy the Reapers.

Which come to think of it... why would anyone ever think that would work?

Loving this! The writing is amazing. March down to Bioware and hand them this comic. They could learn a lot from you!

You know... I despise the Indoctrination Theory when applied to the endings given to us by Bioware. It makes not a single lick of sense in that context. But I'm a big fan of a good fanwank and admire the ingenuity it took to come up with the idea and have read some fun fics exploring it (though I had to shut down entire parts of my thinking to enjoy them). But the angle you seem to be taking with it here in even bring it up/ Pretty effing brilliant. Me likey.

Small error: EDI's speech bubble when she says "I'm just...looking for options, Jeff. There are always options." is outlined in blue, which is Joker's color.

Koobs, is this following a super epic Paragon Shep who always makes the right decisions? The reason I ask is because in one of my playthroughs (not my main, mind you) Mordin was alive. Despite this, my room is covered in joy juice.

If I recall correctly, he said that Marauder Shields was following a best paragon path. However, Shepard's gender and romance isn't determined yet.(or it is, but we don't know yet)

Thanks for the clarification. I had speculated (c wut i did thar) that this was the case. Also, I believe he said that there would be an alternate comic for male and femShep.

After the EC, I thought this project would die out. We got closure, an epilogue, and less plot-holes even. But right when I feel like there is nothing that could be done, you continue to improve the content of this fic nearly exponentially! Joker's sacrifice tugged at the heartstrings like some sort of fucked up mortitian who plays violin on the side, and Mordin basically coming back from the dead in order to help everyone in his own brilliant way and solidify his place as the best Salarian, scientist, and/or humanoid figure in the entirety of the multiverse, including that one universe where there was supposed to be a character better than Mordin, but space-time imploded due to the violation of a universal fact, that fact being "Mordin Solus. He was number one!"

Hate to break it to you, but that's wrong. You have not read the manual.

From the Mass Effect 2 Codex:

"..and a specialized quantum computer called a "blue box".
An AI cannot be transmitted across a communication channel or computer network. Without its blue box, an AI is no more than data files. Loading these files into a new blue box will create a new personality, as variations in the quantum hardware and runtime results create unpredictable variations."

So.. Ye, you screwed this one up, sorry ._.

"Loading these files into a new blue box will create a new personality" - exactly. Actually not a screw up. Intentional. Joker not a scientist. :)

As much as I can say without spoiling what's coming. ;)

I'm confused. Is this a recording of Mordin or a transmission? Is he still dead or alive some how?? Also, is Mordin's studies indicating that the Crucible is a Reaper indoctrination weapon?? I'm kinda confused on that...

Please, you should make another sequence about indoctrination of Shepard. One episode where M.S. shoots indoctrinated Shep IS NOT ENOUGH. I think his indoctrination should be emphasized. Please, make a dream-like sequence where Shepard is indoctrinated and make it so we can see IT from his mind perspective, thats basically like game`s last moments, just more blurry, with shadows and over the sequence his mind is filled with various characters, memorable scenes, phrases from the game. Through the whole sequence hell be walking like in a dream and in the end there will be that panel(where Shep and Anderson sat down) The voice in his head will use game characters to command him, that voice wants him to press the switch, switch that can activate the crucible. That all happens in his mind while hes in clinical death, after M.S. shot him.. I hope you get the sense of this
