Marauder Shields 35: Plan B (Mass Effect) by koobismo Marauder Shields 35: Plan B (Mass Effect) by koobismo
The 35th Episode of the "Marauder Shields" Mass Effect Comic.

In this one... Plans are put into motion aboard the Crucible, with three different agendas clashing to decide the fate of this Cycle.

A weird episode

This episode is a weird one - it's been planned out as a setup episode for three different storylines, it introduces two new OC characters - Professor Irving (previously mentioned in Episode 28) and Marcus Strieland (previously unmentioned) and provides us with the weirdest codex portion ever (though not as meaningless as you might think after glancing over it).

If that's not enough - the whole thing has a few little eye winks and hints towards our future reveals spread around it's story, dialogues and codex. Reading it twice might be a good idea for all those of you who like to weave their own theories about where MS is headed. ;)

Hope that despite it's weirdness, weird new character (the mask-wearing batshit crazy Irving), weird pacing, weird music selection and overally weird tone you'll be able enjoy it nonetheless! The next episode will be a bit closer to my heart and to our standards. ;)

This is an ongoing story providing an alternative fan-made ending to the Mass Effect trilogy, with our own game-changing maverick transforming the course of history: Marauder Shields. Be sure to start reading at episode 6. Special thanks to MichelKobayashi and my awesome team, especially our editor - AdoreeLyssa!

Hope is Alive!

[The Mass Effect universe, its design and characters are owned by BioWare/EA Productions. This is a work of parody and fan-fiction, created under the terms of fair use. Special thanks to BioWare for creating the world we all love and care for! I remain a huge ME & BW fan!]

P.S. Help me spread this series around - retweet, send out links, share this with your friends and post it on your facebook wall!

aww, is Irving the crazy guy from the first mission of me1? yeah, he is crazy.

I've always had a problem with the "gun to the head" stand-off and it isn't quite the threat to Jacob that one might think. First there is reaction time. Basically, anyone with gun training "should" know that you don't get withing several feet of who your pointing the gun at or they might just take it away from you. This is why I HATE Thane's death. The other thing worth mentioning is that Jacob has biotic shields. As a matter of fact he is the only one in ME2 with that specific power, which is why I originally chose him for holding the shield on the Collector base. Which of course was the "wrong" choice.

Really curious how your going to have this play out.

By the way, has anyone else noticed how often the characters in ME3 can commit suicide? Forgetting for a moment that the original ending had Shepard committing suicide, there are several other characters who could proceed him. The possibles I know about are Mordin, Samara, Tali, Legion and yes I'm including Thane. There may be others who actively take their own lives that I haven't run across.

I mean no offense but that human dude in the third panel has absurdly strange cheekbones. Might be the angle, i dunno.
But yes, the Crucible being from Reaper origins/designs makes so much more sense than thousands of civilisations managing to make and keep stashes of information safe for the next 50,000 years.
A creepy but good codex bit there.

Man i know its completely imposible to do, but it would be so awesome if your ending could somehow be modded into the game.....

in a perfect world

It's in it's infancy, but choreography mods are possible. Look up ME3 MEEM. It's a custom mod that replaces the canon Starchild conversation, with original content as well as fan-made voice acting.

It's not the best there is, by far. But it's the fact that fans accomplished it, that makes it great.
athmystikal Featured By Owner Oct 15, 2012
Unless BioWare let us (which is not going to happen), we won't be able to do that. Mass Effect games are not modder friendly.

Since Marauder Shields contains a lot of backstories (related to Cerberus, Nhylus..), adding them all to the end of the game is not very appealing.

Still it would be awesome if we could do it. UnrealEngine is a pretty easy engine and all the assets we need for MS are already there. So if they ever release the mod tools, this could become a reality.
Arcadia365 Featured By Owner Oct 13, 2012
I just though of something... it would have been incredible if in the real mass effect 3 shepard almost dies and the battle plays out depending entirely on shepards past choices, how he influenced characters etc
StrawberryRainPop Featured By Owner Oct 12, 2012
Definitely weird, but the last part was great!

So many different paths, so many lines, in this comic i can't wait until they come together at the end it will be brilliant :)

MarauderShieldsVG Featured By Owner Oct 5, 2012
You know what dude? I just thought of something, you should have called this:

"Plan B from outer space", too late now, but that would have been perfect.
Elgorfo1 Featured By Owner Oct 5, 2012
wait i thought T'sima was Dr. Jelize from the asari war assets
Pharmer Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Love where the story is going. I don't normally like OC's but these are actually interesting especially Irving.
FritoDan Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Another episode well done. And I think you can put to bed all the "sorry this episode is weird" disclaimers. You know we love it.

Demyu Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Brilliant! And creepy as hell.
Now we know what happens if already schizophrenic individual get himself slightly indoctrinated. That's almost lovecraftian horror in his journal. It will be a hell of a job to voice it - with intonations changing almost every phrase and all that creepiness - but it will be a gem if done right.
trucydoll Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Oooh, I am intrigued. I get the feeling this is one I'm going to reread months from now and find something that winds up being incredibly important in hindsight....

And I am so tempted to crop down that panel of Hackett and start using it as a reaction image. Soooo tempted.

A classic "Click Hello". :D

soo strange....
I can't wait to see where is it going, I can't wait to see Shepard!
Agrajab Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Love it, and the indoctrinated journal entry at the end is perfect and creepy.

Great work koobismo! I love it.
WhereIsBaoDur Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Oh and by the way, that particular Nietzschian quote was BRILLIANT. Perfect for the entanglement-like aspect of Indoctrination, the Lovecraftian feel of (early) Mass Effect, it also has a "There's no going back" vibe that i believe fits "real nice and kentucky" with our experience of the story- and more importantly, Shepard's. THANKS.
WhereIsBaoDur Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012
Meaningless? Damn, that's one of the most important codex entry you've written. And it still fit well with the idea i've had about your crucible. I've written it in a note some time ago, but i'm sure you haven't got the time to read it. :P Keep up the good work.

Absolutely thrilling! I am so freaking excited about the MScanon that every time I see one of your episodes pop up I drop everything and lap it up like a parched dog in a deserted desert. I also love the music selection by the way, makes it even cooler, and I get to find a bunch of neat new songs. Thanks!

Oh man, I get the jitters thinking about this whole thing, all the little hints like skittles on the ground. Eating one at a time, until I look up and see a big surprise! Jesus this whole Marauder Shields thing is like a drug addiction. I have to have MOAR!

congrats Koobs.. you have finally put up an episode that will keep me up at night. [link] You have driven me through the full gamut of emotions. You've thrilled me, pissed me off, worried me, made me smile , made me cry.. and now you've scared the crap out of me. Bravo.

DEAR GOD. YOUR MORDIN IS MY HEADCANON. It's like he's still here even after tuchanka ;_;
mjjdj88 Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2012
ok i would like to state that if jacob dies i will be extremely dissapointed. i will most likely, no scratch that, definitely cry. i know majority of people hate jacob and think he sucks but he is honestly my second favorite character, behind Garrus of course. youve got me on the edge of my seat now! i know it wont be next episode we see what happens so im gonna be stressing for a while, but keep being amazing koobs!!!
sirartsalot Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2012`re a hero. You`re giving bioware a way to finish this trilogy right. And if they`re too stupid or too arrogant to even consider using your work, then screw em.

I was a bit confused about the scene changing between Marcus and Irving, but then I get it at the 10th panel lol.
A very good setup, showing how even within the Alliance and Crucible project, corruption/indoctrination arises.
By the way, who exactly is Dr. T'Sima? She looks awfully familiar but I just can't remember who she is...
Was she the technician in Saren's secret base in Virmire?
redsteven Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2012
I liked the episode, but I do think it would be a little less confusing at first if the 2 different scenes had NOTICEABLY different backgrounds, so you could easily tell they were happening in different places.

Aside from that, awesome work.
athmystikal Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2012
I agree. I had to read it twice to understand the correct flow of events. Anyway, koobs has already told us it would be a bit confusing and certainly require a re-read.
Illmad Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
"Parody and fan fiction" Well... To be honest I consider this to be canon. At least after I managed to some degree suppress the memories of the original ending. Yours is way more consistent with the ME universe. But I guess that's the entire point.
Movieguyabw Featured By Owner Oct 3, 2012
I have to agree. MS is canon, in my eyes.

That is, to say, I still view the endings we're presented with as parts of the canon as well - just everything following the death of Marauder Shields is the worst-case-scenario/Indoctrination endings. If you want the true ending - you have to let Marauder Shields shoot you. :D
The-Lieber Featured By Owner Oct 4, 2012  Hobbyist Writer
That is actually pretty smart! :D
