Marauder Shields 36: Memories That We Are (Ver. C) by koobismo Marauder Shields 36: Memories That We Are (Ver. C) by koobismo
The 36th Episode of the "Marauder Shields" Mass Effect Comic.

In this one... The strings of the puppeteer are cut, as a central character fights to wake up.

BACKGROUND MUSIC

Be sure to play this track in the background to upgrade your reading experience: [link]

OTHER VERSIONS

Shepard is a Colonist [link]
Shepard is a Spacer [link]

AFTERWORD

On the narrow path...

This episode concentrates on Shepard fighting to remember, to reignite the fire that the Reapers attempted to extinguish completely. As you might notice it also kills off the StarChild for good, assigning his face and role in the story prior to ME3's finale to a completely different backstory, different character, different meaning... Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do. ;)

A full-on clarification about this arc and what it means is incoming in the next Shep/Thane episode, but those of you who like to create their own theories should already be able to piece this little puzzle together.

As our mid-season finale is finally around the corner (Episode 40!), expect the pace of the action to... Pick up significantly. ;)

GENERAL INFORMATION

This is an ongoing story providing an alternative fan-made ending to the Mass Effect trilogy, with our own game-changing maverick transforming the course of history: Marauder Shields. Be sure to start reading at episode 6. Special thanks to MichelKobayashi and my awesome team, especially our editor - AdoreeLyssa!

Hope is Alive!

[The Mass Effect universe, its design and characters are owned by BioWare/EA Productions. This is a work of parody and fan-fiction, created under the terms of fair use. Special thanks to BioWare for creating the world we all love and care for! I remain a huge ME & BW fan!]

P.S. Help me spread this series around - retweet, send out links, share this with your friends and post it on your facebook wall!

Here's the thing about the ending. You can argue that it's good or that it makes sense. I would disagree with you but that is your opinion and you are entitled to it. My problem with the ending is how, if you don't go with Bioware's 'sore loser' refusal ending, Shepard just gives up. I don't care if your playing a paragon, renegade, paragade, colonist, spacer, earthborn, sole survivor, war hero, ruthless, soldier, adept, engineer, sentinel, vanguard, infiltrator, man or woman. There is one thing that connects every single Shepard no matter how you play him or her: Shepard never gives up. Thank you for getting that right when Bioware got that so very very wrong.

I won't get tired of saying it, THIS must be the ending of Mass Effect 3, i love how you take on all the possible stories of all our Shepards into account when writing these strips, i just love it, every piece of your work tells how much you like ME universe, and that's the most important ingredient that will keep everyone coming over and over reading each new chapter, can't wait to see the next one!

You actual gave the most hated character (In gaming history) a good story! I'm speechless. This fit the story so well. This is more background story than all 3 ME together about Earthborn, and the others. Keep up the good work.

Thank you koobs, for turning Mass Effect into Mass Effect again.

Bioware has lost it`s damn mind.

I forgot to say but you're totally correct, no incarnation of Shepard would just give up, back down or relent, just not who they are.

I have to say I love what you’ve done with the kid. This whole comic is so epic in so many ways, why something like this didn’t actually happen within the game is mind boggling.

Btw I remember a few weeks ago you posted a journal asking for some more help on the comic. I’d be happy to help out in any way I can.

Thank you, FFzero565! Yeah, I was definitely expecting an explanation for the dreams to happen in the games... But there was none. We have our own then. ;)

As far as helping me out goes - please send an e-mail to koobismo@koobismo.com and CC jeff@koobismo.com - it can take a bit for me to reply but all help is greatly appreciated! :)

I could imagine this scene happening in my Headcanon with my Shepard raised in Dublin in an orphanage and being taken to the phoenix park with the other Orphans. Good Work!

Thank you! :) One of my main goals was to make this applicable to all Shepards, basing it off the little bits of information we get about him/her in the games, and from how the story is handled regarding to Shepard's duty and approach to those in need.

All three of these are awesome. :3 Thanks for making one for every Shepard background.

By the way, what's that pillar of light on the sixth-to-last panel? I can't seem to recognize it.

Thanks! :) Quick answer: it's the beam leading to the Citadel, just shown from a different angle.

Thanks for the answer. :) I thought it was that (really, what else could it be, except for the Synthesis beam), but I wasn't sure.

To give you a more detailed comment (didn't have much time before), I find it interesting that you chose such an old memory for Shepard who's gone through so much since then. At first it felt a little out of place, but I read it a few times, and I like it. :) Personally, I would've gone with Shepard's psychological profile instead, although that would've made setting it in a forest a little tricky. At any rate, this works just as well. :)

Thank you. :) Yeah, I've worked it in basing it off from two angles - everything we saw in the dream sequences shown in the game (I was wondering whether they'll be explained at the end of the game while on my first playthrough - and I was a bit disappointed when I understood that the kid and the forest were just there because "DRAMA!") and my own spin on the indoctrination theory, and how it tried to break Shepard for some time now. Glad you liked the result in the end! :)

It's puzzling how the same team who pulled off Mordin's sacrifice so masterfully also came up with these dream sequences. It's like they were beating me in the head with that kid throughout the game, yelling "This is dramatic! Care about him, dammit!" But all I could think about on my first and only playthrough was "Did that kid even exist?" and "Why the heck does Shepard keep dreaming about him?". Then came the Catalyst, and Shepard wasn't even surprised that it took the form of the kid she'd been dreaming about. The whole 'arc' (if you can call it that) was terribly done and made no sense whatsoever.

But you fixed that. :) Once again, I applaud your skill in cleaning up BioWare's mess--part of why I've never written ME3 fanfiction is that I just couldn't figure out how to turn this into a remotely satisfying ending. I have no idea how you do it, but you do, and it's awesome. :)

I love them all, koobs. You did a fine job in showing the different backgrounds ^^
I actually got a friend to start reading this, be he stopped after a few chapters...
Wanna know why? He had only played the EC DLC, so how was quite happy with the endings. Reading this only made his content with the endings disappear.
And for that reason he stopped reading it, so the game would retain some replay value for him. xD It's just denial, he'll return soon.

Untill next time, still loving your work!

Seems to me like the kid from the Earth intro is a hallucination (makes sense because everyone ignores him) and represents the people Shepard feels a duty to protect (the kid in the forest, and all the people of Earth)
That image haunted Shepard in those PTSD-ish dreams, and now Thane is using it to help Shepard remember his strength, guiding him out of unconsciousness and back into the fight

This is absolutely brilliant.

The background music ended just as I read the words "I remember." (Coincidence, I know, but still cool.)

Actually, more than a coincidence, I always choose the suggested background music with a stopwatch in my hand, measuring a few read-throughs, including silent ones and out-loud ones, finding an average in the end. ;) So, yeah, if you ever managed to get the music sync perfectly with some of the comics (especially the monologue ones, spent some time on getting it right in them) - there's a very big chance I actually make an attempt at making it that way. :)
