Marauder Shields 38: Dum Spiro Spero (Mass Effect) by koobismo Marauder Shields 38: Dum Spiro Spero (Mass Effect) by koobismo
The 38th Episode of the "Marauder Shields" Mass Effect Comic.

In this one... Admiral Hackett is confronted with an uneasy decision while the Normandy falls to its greatest enemy.

Be sure to play this track in the background to upgrade your reading experience... Since this episode may be a bit longer than the background track, I suggest playing it from a playlist or in a loop...

Last episode before the plunge!

Here's our last episode before the mid-season finale - which will come packed into episodes "The Debt - Part 1" and "The Debt - Part 2" (followed with a proper "second half" opener), which will change a lot of stuff in our narrative and its overall tempo and focus. I'm already excited!

Though the mid-season finale is focused on... different events, all you Nihlus, Jack, Miranda, Samara and Anderson lovers might start getting excited about what's coming next! ;)

This is an ongoing story providing an alternative fan-made ending to the Mass Effect trilogy, with our own game-changing maverick transforming the course of history: Marauder Shields. Be sure to start reading at episode 6. Special thanks to MichelKobayashi and my awesome team, especially our editor - AdoreeLyssa!

Hope is Alive!

[The Mass Effect universe, its design and characters are owned by BioWare/EA Productions. This is a work of parody and fan-fiction, created under the terms of fair use. Special thanks to BioWare for creating the world we all love and care for!]

P.S. Help me spread this series around - retweet, send out links, share this with your friends and post it on your facebook wall!

I like how your comic takes advantage of it's medium of a comic. Where, you can have all of these interconnected characters and situations. While all of them are interesting, there are so many, it's a little hard to follow.

Yay hackett, finally doing something tactically sound. No offense...
Harbinger keeping the Normand busy Is tactically sound seeing as it appears to be the only ship in the entire galaxy fitted with a working Thanix cannon. So much more in line with my Favourite Reaper.
And the Joker/EDI thing, rather touching. Although i wonder if she could copy and send, but i wonder if an AI is too complex to do that.

Hackett always showed to have good instincts. He continues to make the tough calls, and the right ones.

Now what little Charlie Foxtrot is our indoctrinated little TIM going to throw into the mess?

He was all about control as recently as the attack on his HQ, he was willing to kill humans by the gross for his own agenda and go to open wore with the Alliance in the middle of the bloodiest conflict ever. It would be completely Out Of Character for him to suddenly be part of the team again.

*Sniffles* JEFF AND EDI!!!!!! All of my FEELS!!!!
Why the hell didn't we have any heart-wrenching moments like that in the game? Well, I didn't think there were.

Poor Hackett - it's a tough call, especially when only a very few people could put all the pieces together and realise the Crucible is BAD NEWS!

Joker's codex, I love it. Very well done.

Can't wait for the mid-season finale - HOLD THE LINE!

I am holding the line by my goddamn fingernails! This...why wasn't any of this in the game? It's what I, what so many of us expected and needed from Bioware. Never stop my good man. However long it takes for you to finish, you take your time, don't rush this work of genius. Dum Spiro Spero
calindorz Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
As always, love your work Koobs. How you manage to capture the emotion of the moment is truly talented.

Mine too, while I'm writing about emotion.

It's a testament to both you and to Bioware's writers, that BW got their hooks into me with the trilogy, and you for building on it, and keeping up with that high standard.

On the one hand, I'm "No! Not Joker and EDI!" On the other, what a way to go. Fly Harbinger into the sun or something, Joker!
CrulLovetroy Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
By the way, the length of the track works fine for me, and I got to say it *nearly* fits every panel perfectly. Reached the last stand of the Normandy a little too fast, though, and read the letter during the last epic fighting music thingy played. However, I'm a very fast reader. Might not work for everyone, I don't know :) just wanted to tell you it actually turned out pretty well for me ;)

"Are we more than our thoughts?"

Looks like EDI managed to answer herself.

But I'd like to ask a question, if that's okay. Isn't EDI's body still on Earth with everyone else? If it's something you mentioned before and I missed it I apologize.
CrulLovetroy Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
Yes, it is. That's both the advantage and inconvenience of being a hardware-driven robot like EDI: Her consciousness is both aboard the Normandy as well as on earth :) but if the Normandy is destroyed, the body dies, too ... it's as if she possessed the body of the doctor, but the real 'her' is still on the Normandy. Something BioWare missed completely ... well, they mentioned it somewhere, but she didn't get quite as much screentime as a shapeless voice than as this super-sexy robot slut thing. Well. High heels and big boobs. What more can I say? Looks like those things are much more handy in the future. Ash seems to be addicted on them as well :P
erd249 Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012  Student Writer
Thank you, but that still begs the question of what the body's doing wherever it is. Again if this was already mentioned and I missed it I apologize.
CrulLovetroy Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
Ah, you're actually right :) no, it wasn't mentioned yet :) the whole character didn't have an appearence, come to think of it...I completely forgot about that fact - thank you for reminding me. Not sure if I'm correct, though. However, I guess this goes hand in hand with the question what the Normandy's crew did after the assault on the beam in the MS canon ... since the EC is not part of it (obviously!), that's one big issue I have with the story. I really hope Koobs has an explanation for it. Maybe the time when Shepard awakens... I hope he covers the EDI arc while doing so. Aaaaaand there's one more thing I'd like to point out, just in case the Normandy survives Harbinger's attack - showing EDI's body, alive, saving the core team's ass out of a dangerous situation just at the end of a comic would be much appreciated :D ... if the ship survived, of course. Which, after all, I do not want to happen. Some things best go down dramatically :) This would fit the general tone of the MS comics as well as the ME trilogy.
erd249 Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012  Student Writer
Hey now, Koobs knows what he's doing. No matter what comes out of this, it's going to be EPIC.

Plus if anybody can get clear of this one, Joker can. He's our badass boy, been there for us from the very beginning. I'm not even worried about him, or the Normandy.
CrulLovetroy Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
Alright then, I agree it's got to be epic and awesome! :)
Hm but Joker... I don't know. From a writer's perspective, his death would fit the series. But I think it would've caused some kind of report on Hackett's ship. At least some kind of reaction ... which it did not. Thus, I'm not sure if he really is dead. Anyway, excited to see what Koobs has prepared for us! :)
erd249 Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012  Student Writer
Ditto. :) Trust in Koobs and away we go on our epic adventure. (And hope Bioware gets its act together for Dragon Age 3.)
CrulLovetroy Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
Well, it's a different team ;) I hope they learned from the mistakes of ME3 ...and the newest Assassin's Creed as well :P
