CAST & CREW

Story / Lead: Koobismo @koobismo

Editor: AdoreeLyssa @adoreelyssa
Jana: Brizzy @BrizzyVoices
Eli Wallace: Omahdon @Omahdon
Music: Kaneda & Soundmopi

AFTERWORD

The one that scurries

I'm coming back to my online presence after almost two weeks of not-being-around, a time full of adventures (not really, unless you count playing the awesome new XCOM game as an adventure), family (just a bit), getting older (27!) and overally loco stuff (don't even ask)...

And what a great episode to kick me off into higher gear! Not only is this the longest audiobook chapter to date (there will be longer, though, since my comic scenarios seem to grow and grow exponentially with each new one), but it's also marked by two uber-powerful performances by our brilliant Brizzy and equally amazing Omahdon... I love it, and I hope you'll love it too.

I'm switching back to full Koobs mode after wearing my distinguished and business-oriented "Jakubface" for the last few days... So, yeah, Episode 36 ("Memories That We Are") comes out tomorrow, be there or be square.

Hope is Alive!

P.S.3. Just to mark this newest achievement: I made that Thorian-shadowey sound effect myself, how cool is that? Of course Jeff had to properly equalize it and put it all together to stop it from sounding like an audiovomit, but, hey, not everyone is born an awesome sound engineer. ;)

Thanks in advance and keep the great work... you should be an inspiration for the morons at BioWare...

That's the deal, I can't. I could send you links to the samples (short, low-quality with the name of the library/website being repeated over them every two seconds), but there are no full-versions of these tracks to be listened to anywhere on the net, and I can't post them, or I'd breach the license I've acquired them with. I can only use them as a part of a multimedia project (so: in coalition with other elements) as far as I know. Let me look into this, if I'll be able to post the tracks without voices anywhere without having to pay any humongous extra fees, I'll do so.

(was on Kickstarter)

I played Battlezone I at age 4 and am still playing Battlezone II. This game was meant to be a spiritual successor and was looking better than ever.

Wow.. The comic strip by itself was great. But with this stunning voice over it turned into something far more amazing. Well done to all those responsible for this creation; writer, voice actor, everyone.

The manner in which she speaks is stunning. Also the emotion that pours out of her voice is just amazing. For some reason voice of the person reading the codex reminds me of Gideon Emery. Good job people. My hats off to your whole team- again.:)

The problem with the licensed tracks is that they're... licensed. As in: I pay for them and I receive them with a list of license rights and conditions I must follow, including not publishing the tracks by themselves in any form that would enable people to just reuse them without paying the authors. I'll try to look into forming a separate soundtrack and the additional costs this would bring, but for now we need to follow the copyrights even if they're sometimes a bit limiting.

Holy f*ing shit was this awesome! The best one so far and i mean by far. It isnt just givig voice to the written word, but the little things in it give so much more. The perfect timing with the music and the words "the Thorian" gave me chills. And the fact that the thorian effect is practicly gone by the end, where Jana talks about her incapability to understand her smiling, it gave such a deep meaning to it that was nowhere to be found in the simple written version.

Sometimes the thorian effect sounded a little late though. Im pretty sure it had the same pace over the whole thing, but when the speaking slows down and each word has its own separate tone, it sticks out a little. Nothing enjoyment-breaking though.

At first i thought this kinda effect would better fit a rachni speech, but now im just way too blown away to complain about that. And it makes me shudder with excitement to think what you will be able to do with the rachni's voice, if there will be such an episode ;)

Thank you for the feedback. I'm happy to hear that you picked up on some of the very small changes in performance and effects. There are small changes in intensity of the effect to not only emphasize emotion, but to expose small moments of humanity that still remain (i.e. the effect disappearing at the end).

As for the effect sounding a little late, it was intentional. Wanted to give the impression of hearing both Jana and the Thorian speaking at the same time. (Yes, I know the Thorian cannot speak) With the delay on the effect, to me, it just sounded a little more ominous. But I'll take your review in to consideration when/if this effect is needed again.

Thanks for the feedback. This really helps me/us for future chapters.

Actually the delay is not an issue at all. At 2nd (and 3rd,4th,5th...) listening, it didnt come up. It seems i just tend to listen too well the first time around, trying to hear the connection between the original speech and the effect, but when one just lays back and enjoys it, its not detectable at all.

Keep up the excellent quality, its pure gold.

Not only is Episode 33 the best of the whole MS canon so far, but its audiobook just brings this piece of most beautiful art to a whole new level. Knowing that all those are amateur VAs, what they have achieved with this one is incredible. Extremely awesome!
Especially Brizzy was stunning. She got the whole character of Jana perfectly right (I suppose you instructed her?), and her pronounciation and voiceacting fits in extremely well. Omahdon is good, too, but not quite as talented (don't get me wrong, he did a good job, too, I just figured his voice acting is quite average, while Brizzy's is just...WOW. Please, if she is willing to, give her more characters to voice in future audiobooks. And Omahdon as well - I'm sure he'll grow with the challenge. At the moment, his part felt a little cold and not quite as emotional (not saying the doctor is an emotional character, but the way Omahdon read it felt exactly like that - read).
Hm, also, I got the impression this audiobook wouldn't quite fit in a connected story storyline to tell what's going on. It would just feel a bit wrong. It's great as what it is, but it's place in the MS canon would make it difficult to implement it inside the final audiobook.
And I am very excited about the new episode coming out tomorrow! Having a new episode to read on a day I do not need to be present at university but instead sit at home doing what remains of this week's homework is a lucky coincidence :)
I'm just happy right now. Brizzy and Omahdon both are a great addition to your VA team. Cheers to both of them! May they be able to stay true to Marauder Shields and hold the line with us! :)

They're both - as is the whole team - amazing, that's for sure. :)

As for "I suppose you instructed her?"

Only delivered the text, Brizzy created an incredible performance all on her own, analyzing the character and the story I've written for Jana, and going with it from there. :) The whole credit goes to her!

Thanks for the feedback.

Brizzy is an amazing talent. If you haven't done so already, you should look her up on YouTube.

As for Omahdon, the guy is a pro. Literally. You have to keep in mind, the role of Jana requires a lot of acting. I mean, just look at her! lol As for Omahdon's role in this episode, he's a scientist recording a typical journal entry. If you listen to any medical or legal journal recordings (which I have), you won't hear much emotion or excitement. It's routine. Only at the end does he start getting personal, at which time he abruptly turns off the recorder.

And if you're still not convinced, take a listen to Chapter 22's audiobook. This one also features Omahdon. The guy is amazingly talented and extremely professional.

But that's just my opinion. I appreciate your viewpoint and thoughts. Keep them coming! Thank you!

Ah well, I didn't want to insult him nor would I deny his voice acting skills, which are amazing (just listened to Chapter 22, you were right). However, I have to deal with scientists quite a lot in the last months due to intense studying of physics :) therefore, I had quite a certain image in my mind when reading the last lines of the 'Reborn' episode. It was much more alive in my imagination, and what Omahdon did is not at all how I thought it would sound. All those happy scientists at our university, sitting in their little labs and laughing their heads of about silly mathematical jokes, are driven by their love for science and their researches. I can't imagine them sounding as wooden as the doctor did in this episode. However, if that's what Omahdon intended, it's fantastic. Otherwise, I'll admit it's still very good. After all, he stood in Brizzy's shadow for me when voicing this episode.
But I'll give him this: It's of course another way to interpret the monologue. If he likes it that way, then so be it. I'm fine with that. Works for me as well :)
Peace ;)
